Magomed Ankalaev held the UFC light heavyweight title for about seven months. On Saturday night in Abu Dhabi, he starts the walk back.

The UFC returns to Etihad Arena for UFC Abu Dhabi, a Fight Night card headlined by the former champion against rising contender Bogdan Guskov at 205 pounds. Both men hit the mark at Friday's weigh-in, each scaling 205.5 pounds, MMA Fighting reported. The main event is scheduled for five rounds, with the winner angling toward a light heavyweight title picture that is currently in flux.

For Ankalaev, the fight is a first step out of the worst night of his career.

A short reign, and a fast ending

Ankalaev took the belt from Alex Pereira by unanimous decision on March 8, 2025, according to UFCStats records. The rematch went the other way. On Oct. 4, 2025, at UFC 320, Pereira stopped Ankalaev by KO/TKO at 1:20 of the first round, reclaiming the championship inside 100 seconds.

Guskov, for his part, is not treating that loss as a warning.

"A bad day at the office," he called it in an interview with MMA Fighting.

That is the frame Ankalaev now fights against: a title run that lasted about seven months and ended in one exchange, without a single successful defense. A win over Guskov does not restore the belt, but it keeps him in the room where the next title conversation happens.

Guskov took the fight in "50 seconds"

Guskov arrives on short notice and with momentum. He replaced Khalil Rountree Jr. on less than two weeks' notice for the main event, MMA Fighting reported, stepping into his first UFC headliner. He was originally booked to rematch Jan Blachowicz at UFC Belgrade a week later; the two fought to a majority draw at UFC 323 in December.

The 205-pounder said the decision to take on Ankalaev instead was immediate.

"This chance can change my career, change my life, and this Ankalaev, I think [he has a bigger] name than Jan," Guskov told MMA Fighting. "For me, [I didn't] need time to say, 'Hey, let's go.' I say let's go like this, 50 seconds."

Guskov is unbeaten in his past five octagon appearances after dropping his UFC debut to Volkan Oezdemir in September 2023, MMA Fighting reported. He has finished all four of his wins in the promotion, including stoppages of Ryan Spann and Nikita Krylov.

Asked for a prediction, he offered a metaphor rather than a round.

"My fights, every time is like Walido. You know what Walido is? Aspirin," Guskov said. "Be ready, take a pillow, and eat this one."

Whether the bout carries title stakes is an open question. MMA Fighting's preview show framed it directly, asking whether Ankalaev and Guskov are fighting in a title eliminator. Light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg, who beat Jiri Prochazka at UFC 327 in April, is sidelined with an injury, according to Guskov, who said he would take an interim title fight against any opponent if he wins.

The card loses a fight on the day of the event

Hours before the card was set to begin, UFC Abu Dhabi lost a bout.

Islam Dulatov, a 12-1 welterweight, withdrew on fight day after being hospitalized, both Bloody Elbow and MMA Fighting reported Saturday. His scheduled main card fight against the returning Wellington Turman was canceled, leaving the event with 12 bouts.

Dulatov's management said the fighter was admitted to a hospital on Friday.

"Last night, Islam was admitted to the hospital due to an infection and spent several hours receiving medical treatment," the statement, posted to Dulatov's social media and cited by both outlets, read. "Despite every effort to keep the fight on, the decision was made together with the UFC to withdraw him from the bout in the interest of his health and well-being. Right now, the only priority is for Islam to make a full recovery."

The loss stings on both sides of the matchup. Dulatov, a Contender Series graduate who knocked out his opponent in his UFC debut, was one of the card's more-watched prospects. Turman, meanwhile, was set to return after roughly two and a half years away, a layoff he attributed to four shoulder surgeries, MMA Fighting reported. Turman said on social media that he hopes for a fast turnaround, either rebooking the Dulatov fight or facing a new opponent.

The UFC had not announced whether another bout would be promoted to the main card, MMA Fighting reported.

The co-main event pairs one-time flyweight title challenger Steve Erceg with Ramazan Temirov, both of whom made the 126-pound limit, according to MMA Fighting's weigh-in report.

Elsewhere on the card, heavyweight Valter Walker continues a busy run, with lightweight contenders and regional standouts rounding out a card heavy on prospects. Santiago Ponzinibbio, Ismael Bonfim and Dustin Jacoby are among the veterans slated for the preliminary portion.

The main card streams on Paramount+ beginning at noon ET, with preliminary bouts starting at 9 a.m. ET, per MMA Fighting.

For Ankalaev, the arithmetic is simple even if the fight is not. He was champion in March. He was not by October. A late-notice opponent with four straight finishes and nothing to lose stands between him and the path back. The fight goes tonight.
